NOTE: Check your sewing machine owner's manual for directions on how to prepare your machine for free-stitching (or darning mode) or check with your dealer for instructions. For free-motion stitching, you must be able to drop the feed dogs.

NEEDS:

  • Sewing machine with instruction book, all cords, all feet and an extension cord for those bringing own machines.

  • Darning foot or free-motion attachment for your machine (Open-toe foot if available, for easy visibility)
  • A colorful assortment of regular polyester (hi-sheen), rayon, and metallic threads.  If you don't have rayon or metallic, experiment in class with regular thread before you invest in these decorative threads).

Prepare four "quilt sandwiches" about 15"x15" for practice. A sandwich consists of five  layers:  a top layer of fabric, two layers of Pellon/Vilene stabilizer, a layer of batting and a backing fabric. Pin the sandwich together with safety pins. (but see sandwich 4 below)

  • For sandwiches #1 and #2 use muslin or other inexpensive solid colored fabric for surface and backing.

  • For sandwich #3, make the surface layer from a loose or flowing watercolor-style floral print OR any Bali or batik-style print design, esp. one with flowing lines. With sandwich #3, we will trace the print/motif with free-motion stitching, attempt to capture the "spirit" of the motif and recreate the motif by free-stitching it onto a plain sandwich.
  • For sandwich #4, a favorite solid dark color on the surface three layers of stabilizer, batting and a backing fabric (a total of six layers).
  • Pellon/ Vilene Stabilizer is necessary in these sandwiches to secure good stitch tension.  Buy the "regular" style stabilizer..don't use tear away or iron-on stabilizers, i. e. there should be NO adhesive.  Any weight is fine.
  • Needles --  topstitch, 90/14. Bring several
  • Thread snips or small scissors for clipping threads
  • Needle threader --may be helpful for you
  • Two bobbins wound with regular gray thread
  • Reading glasses--don't forget these if you need them!!

If your machine has dual vertical thread spools (the thread spools set upright), you are all set to go!  If you already own a multiple threads spool holder, or something that might work as a multiple spools holder, please bring it. If you don't have a machine with dual vertical spools, we'll need to "gerryrig" something (I've done this for years!).  Bring something such as a small baby food jar or whisky shot glass to use as a spool holder (so the spool doesn't flop around while sewing).  A drinking straw that will fit over the spool holder will sometimes work. Bring one if you have it.
