Needs List

  • Fabrics--100% cotton fabrics: With this technique, you do not need fabric in large amounts-fat quarters and cuts ¼ to ½ yards are fine. For your log cabin, you will need fabrics in at least 3 different colors (such as red, purple, etc.). Bring three or four values of each color ranging from lightest light to deepest dark with a noticeable value contrast from a distance of approx.10 ft. This will give you a wide choice of fabric from which to choose. Select favorite fabrics including batiks, asymmetrical prints, multicolored hand-dyed fabrics and also a few with a quiet, subtle pattern design. Bring some fun sheers (such as organza) and metallic lamé fabrics for experimentation.

  • Sewing machine is required (one capable of machine blindstitch ---^---^---^ )
  • Special sewing machine feet required  Open-toe appliqué foot
  • Your instruction book, all feet, all cords, extension cords for those bringing own machines
  • Needles (for sewing machine) use regular 80/12 for piecing.
  • Stabilizer  two yards of Pellon/Vilene regular lightweight or mid-weight stabilizer (not iron-on or tear-away) (NOTE: In NZ, Vilene BO505 is apparently the closest to the Pellon Vikki uses. Vikki recommends you try pressing with iron on cotton setting, there should be NO wrinkling or shriveling.)
  • Freezer paper  1-2 yards.
  • Flexible curve tool (only if you have one)
  • Threads bring a good variety of colors for matching or blending with your fabric.
  • Fancy, thick threads, fibers and yarns for decorative use (A few, not a lot)
  • Bobbin wound with gray thread.
  • Batting  One yard.
  • Scissors, paper and fabric.
  • Spray bottle for water.
  • Straight pins (sharp!).
  • Seam ripper and fabric marking pencil
  • Stitch Witchery  (comes on a roll, about 5/8" wide). (Stitch witchery is not available in NZ at the time of writing. Misty Fuse or a comparable white fusible webbing can be substituted.  Note that only a small amount is needed so don't go out and buy a lot of the stuff. Semco hemming web is also a good substitute.)
  • Scotch tape, eraser, pencils, ruler, notebook
  • Please, don't forget your nametags!

Remember, no workshop project is ever a masterpiece. These are fun techniques. Please don't worry or agonize over fabric color choices. Empty your mind of all the "rules" in quilting and come ready to play and experiment!
