Folk Garden Borders: Design and Machine Appliqué Techniques

Design supplies:

  • Pencil and eraser, black marking pen, paper scissors, ruler

  • 5 sheets plain white paper
  • 2 sheets large paper (approx. 18 x 24)

Sewing Supplies: 

  • Sewing Machine (we use a blanket stitch; zigzag stitch can also be used) 

  • Open Toe Appliqué Foot
  • Small scissors for precise cutting of appliqué pieces
  • Basic sewing supplies- pins, hand sewing needle, extra bobbins, etc. 
  • 1 yard paper backed fusible web- lightweight (Sue uses Light Steam a Seam) 
  • Spray Starch

Fabric: 100% cotton (I like to pre-wash my fabric)

  • 10" by 44/45" piece of fabric for background, please starch this fabric before coming to class.

  • Assorted fabric for appliqué- bring small amounts of colors for floral appliqué, include ½ yard piece for bias vine. 

Thread: 50 weight cotton* (50/3 and/or 50/2) in colors to coordinate with appliqué fabric.

Please note: Class project can be made into a small quilt. Sue will have directions for finishing.
