  • Hand dyed backing fabric

  • Batting
  • Feature panel, hand dyed and printed
  • Hand dyed fabric for quilt top
  • 1 x sheet dressmaker's carbon paper
  • 2 x 35cm x 35cm square hand dyed fabric (for samples)
  • 2 x 35cm x 35cm pellon(for samples)
  • 2 x 35cm x 35cm square white backing fabric (for samples)
  • 2 x disposable rubber gloves
  • Instructions and photo
  • Full size pattern. Four designs available:
    • Gungurru (pronounced like "kangaroo", a gum blossom design),
    • Hakea Pods,
    • Banksia
    • Firewheel Flower.

Optional Thread kits for each of these patterns can be purchased seperately (see below).

Needs List #1 (these items ARE NOT required if you order the optional materials kit)

  • Sketch book or loose A4 or A3 paper

  • A couple of sheets of A2 paper
  • Dressmaker's carbon paper OR if you have a portable light box this may be an alternative.
  • Fabric for the background of your quilt top. This can be one piece of fabric or it can be pieced. I personally like to combine large pieces of similarly coloured hand dyed fabrics for my background (usually for larger pieces) or use one piece of interesting hand dyed or hand painted fabric. Allow extra fabric to do samples- preferably the same fabric that you are planning for your quilt . Two to three 30-40cm squares should be enough.
  • Batting and backing fabric to suit quilt top size plus some extra for your samples.
  • Disposable rubber gloves or whatever you use to provide extra grip when machine quilting.
  • Any photos or books which inspire you or which you have a desire to work from.

Needs List #2 : (these items are required by EVERYONE)

  • A white pencil for marking dark fabric. I find light coloured pastel or charcoal pencils good. These are available at good art supply shops.

  • A biro preferably red or blue.
  • Sharp HB pencil OR a Pacer-type pencil with click down leads. These come with HB leads but I suggest that you purchase a pack of 2B leads as well as these are great to mark on fabric with.
  • Thread which will contrast with your background fabric. Cotton is a good choice as is shows up well. If you can find 30 weight all the better as it is a little heavier and gives a nice definite line. You will need thread for background and textural stitching as well and this may blend or contrast with your fabrics - we will be doing samples to determine the best colour. (Threads for kits will be available at an additional cost, see below.)
  • Safety pins for layering quilt.
  • Rotary cutting equipment
  • Normal sewing notions.
  • Sewing machine in good working order, cleaned and oiled and with manual and accessories. Please make sure that you bring the sewing table attachment if it has one- it is very difficult to achieve the necessary control with only a free arm.
  • Darning foot. This is essential and is a foot which allows you to move the fabric under it in any direction. It may or may not be called a darning foot in your manual and what is called a darning foot in your manual may not be the required free motion foot. Please check with your sewing machine retailer if you are in any doubt.
