Intermediate and advanced

Skills required:  students need to be able to use a sewing machine for accurate straight stitching and to use rotary cutting equipment.  They do not need advanced maths and technical drawing skills - honestly!

Needs list:

Fabric: 

  • Three fabrics to use in the design - 

  • 1/2 metre of background fabric
  • 1 fat quarter of each of 2 fabrics to be used as the perspective stars.  
  • More fabric will be needed if the student wishes to expand the design into a larger piece later.

Other Requiements

  • Neutral sewing thread for the machine (darker than the chosen group of fabrics).

  • Pins
  • Scissors (fabric cutting)
  • Scissors (paper cutting)
  • Sharp pencil
  • Coloured pencil (red or any other strong colour)
  • Eraser
  • 12" school type ruler (a longer 18" version would be even better, but this is not critical).
  • Rotary cutter
  • Rotary cutting mat
  • Ruler for use with rotary cutter
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot - an open foot is need for piecing so that you can see ahead easily.
  • Graph paper will be provided by the tutor.
