Sewing Machine:

  • Sewing Machine in good working order, Please bring normal sewing equipment and instruction booklet. You must know how to adjust the thread tension on top and in the bobbin before class - Check with your dealer in neccessary.

  • Open embroidery foot, darning or quilting foot, regular foot.
  • Machine needles - Universal 80/12, Metallica 80/12, Microtex Sharp Needle 70/10.
  • Extra empty bobbins.
  • Extra bobbin case - only if you have one already.

Fabrics: Nature colours, but not too busy. (The vein stitching has to show)  Fat 8ths or scraps from your stash, - you won't need a lot.

  • Cottons:    

    • 2 different greens (one for the top and one for the underside of the leaf).
    • 4 other fabrics (think of autumn colour too), one of them with leaves in the pattern.
  • Organza: See-through white or gold colour.

Needles and Threads:

  • Standard machine sewing threads - 1 green to match your leaf top fabric, plus 2 more shades of that green, 2 browns.

  • 1 clear spool of thin monofilament thread (Madeira, YLI and Gutermann are good).
  • Shiny embroidery threads in orange, yellow and red, and if you have them; a few metallics.
  • 1 spool of green 'Birch' thread (Spotlight).
  • A few lengths of yarns, leftover threads from machining.
  • A couple of embroidery needles - Optional
  • A couple of thicker embroidery threads (brown, green or black) - Optional.

Other Items:

  • One 30x30cm sheet of heavy 'Solvy' or 'Romeo' soluble stabilizer. (I will have some to purchase if you cannot find this)

  • ½  m Vliesofix, ½ m  freezer paper.
  • Fabric scissors, Paper scissors, Small sharp scissors. Tweezers and some straight pins
  • Notebook, Pen, Pencil, sharpener, eraser, fine black permanent marker pen.
  • Small plastic bag (for rubbish), 1 medium size ziplock bag (for taking your treasures home) 
  • A couple of satay sticks or a cuticle orange stick
  • Safety glasses if you are not wearing glasses
  • Your 'Practice Piece' - an A4 size piece of plain fabric with ironed-on stabilizer (medium-to-stiff iron-on Interfacing) - for practice in class and sample stitches.
  • 4 sheets of paper towel

In this intriguing workshop you will learn techniques for creating realistic leaves of many species, hues and seasons. We will be using a variety of threads, fabrics and other decorative materials to produce amazing effects, to enhance your future quilting projects.
