Needs List

Fabrics:

You won't need a lot of fabric for postcards, they are quite small, and you will probably only have time to do a few in this class. Some fabric ideas are:

  • Fun pieces from your stash, some glitzy, some batik, contemporary, oriental,  textured, velvety, pieces with a design or pattern you would like to incorporate  - anything goes

  • 2 different plain fat 1/8ths for base fabrics (I like black satin or lining, homespun neutrals or colours)
  • Another 2 different fat 1/8ths for backing - cotton is good.
  • One fat 1/8 of soft black bridal veil tuille or organza for edging (or your colour choice, - I think a dark colour puts a nice frame on the postcard) - from Spotlight.

Sewing Machine:

  • Sewing Machine serviced, with normal sewing equipment and instruction booklet. You must know how to adjust the thread tension on your machine.

  • Open embroidery foot, darning foot, regular foot
  • Machine needles - Universal 80/12, Metallica 80/12, Microtex Sharp Needle 70/10
  • A few empty bobbins
  • Extra bobbin case (only if you have one)

Threads:

  • Just bring in an array of colours that you have (make sure  to include black, white and grey). I like some shiny and a couple of metallics thrown in

  • Hand embroidery threads, fun wools if you have them, bits of thread left over from sewing&ldots;
  • Clear monofilament (optional)
  • Black "Birch Brand" thread (Spotlight)

Other Items:

  • Safety glasses if you are not wearing glasses

  • Fabric scissors, Paper scissors, Small sharp scissors, A few straight pins.
  • Embroidery needle for hand sewing thread (optional)
  • Notebook, Pencil, pen, medium black permanent marker pen, white pencil marker.
  • ½  m Vliesofix, ½ m of tracing paper.
  • ½ m heavyweight very stiff white iron-on Interfacing. (I will have some for you to buy if needed.)
  • Small cutting board, rotary cutter, ruler
  • Your 'Practice Piece' - an A4 size piece of plain fabric with ironed-on stabilizer (eg. Medium weight iron-on Interfacing - sample included) - for practice in class and sample stitches.
  • Camera,if you wish
  • Please make a wide frame by cutting a rectangular hole 10 x 15cm (or 4' x 6') in an A4 piece of paper or preferably cardboard (last longer), and bring to class.

In this one-day workshop you will be making surprising postcards from your stash of fun fabrics, and learning techniques to enhance your beautiful creations. Don't bring a lot of fabric, these are small pieces, it will be a fun day.
