Needs List

Fabrics:

  • Two white calico or homespun pieces, approximately 45cm x 35cm, with medium-to-stiff iron-on Interfacing already ironed on the back of each piece.

  • A selection of fabric pieces you want to use (see guide). Don't pick fabric with strong, clearly recognizable patterns like checks, circles, straight lines etc. The pieces need be no more than 60x20cm. Keep in mind that you need the colours you see around you in nature, flecked or shaded in greys, blue-greys, purple, greens of all shades and intensities, browns, orange, ochre etc. Good choices are batiks, shaded hand dyed or fabrics that look textured with big and small shapes. Include sky fabric, and some fabric with leaves, grass, rocks and flowers. Attached is a guide sheet with some examples of the kinds of patterns and gradations I use. They are black and white copies, but just imagine them in all kinds of 'nature colours' (I will also bring some fabrics with me, including sky fabrics).
  • 30x40cm of soft bridal veil black tuille (not stiff netting) - from Lincraft or Spotlight

Sewing Machine:

  • Sewing Machine in good working order, with normal sewing equipment and instruction booklet. You must be able to adjust the thread tension on your machine. Check with your dealer if necessary.

  • Open embroidery foot, darning foot, regular foot
  • Machine needles - Universal 80/12, Metallica 80/12, Microtex Sharp Needle 70/10
  • One bobbin in machine with light grey thread, extra empty bobbins
  • Extra bobbin case (only if you have one).

Threads:

  • Standard machine sewing threads in white, cream, black and in nature colours: - greens, browns, blues, medium, light and dark grey, rust etc.

  • 1 clear spool of thin monofilament thread (Madeira or YLI are good).
  • Some embroidery threads, and if you have them; a few metallics
  • Fluffy lengths of yarns (optional)

Other Items:

  • Fabric scissors,

  • Paper scissors,
  • Small sharp scissors,
  • Straight pins,
  • Safety pins.
  • Needle for hand appliqué
  • Notebook, Pencil, sharpener, eraser, pen, ruler, medium black permanent marker pen.
  • One sheet plain paper 55x45 cm for copying the master pattern, 1½ m  freezer paper, 1 m Vliesofix.
  • One or more landscape pictures or drawings for discussion (optional)
  • One small sheet of 'Romeo' soluble stabilizer or Ultra-Solvy. (I will have some to purchase if you cannot find this)

These items plus your enthusiasm and sense of humour will make for three fun, relaxing days of learning. Our aim is to learn some of the most important techniques and embellishments for landscape quilting by working on the top of a small, realistic landscape quilt. We will use my design approach and a selection of my patterns, and get you excited about the world of landscape quilts.
