Needs List

  • Sewing machine in good working order, including all attachments and extension cord.

  • ¼" foot
  • Spare machine needles, light globe, machine oil, spare bobbins.
  • Rotary cutter, spare blades, cutting mat (large as you can carry). 24" x 6"/6½" ruler,12" x 12" square (or larger), 6" or 6 ½" or 7" square
  • Scissors, pins, seam ripper, tape measure, usual sewing equipment.
  • Pellon batting, 2 pieces each 1.25m-1.5m + masking tape to set up design wall.
  • Mid grey or mid violet thread for piecing (or match to your fabrics).

FABRICS: (makes the blocks for two quilt tops) you will need:

  • 2m x 115cm solid colour (or tone on tone, micro print or similar) this will be the accent or feature fabric in both quilts.

    • To save time before class, carefully cut the accent fabric into 36 strips each 1 5/8th" wide across the width of the fabric. Cut each strip in half for a total of 72 strips. Bring the remaining fabric to class.
  • You will need two contrasting groups of fat quarters, 6 in each group for a total of 12 ( or you may use 12 fat eighths in each group for a total of 24)

  • Some suggestions:-

    • 6 fat quarters (or 12 fat eighths) various stripes and 6 fat quarters (or 12 fat eighths) of tone on tone or solids or hand dyes, OR
    • 6 fat quarters(or 12 fat eighths)  various prints of one colour and 6 fat quarters (or 12 fat eighths) various prints in second colour OR
    • 6 fat quarters(or 12 fat eighths) of varied light prints and 6 fat quarters (or 12 fat eighths) of varied dark prints

There should be a distinct difference between the two groups of fabrics

PRE-CLASS PREPARATION

  • To save time before class carefully cut each of the fat quarters into 6 strips each 2 ¾" wide across the widest part of the fabric for a total of 72 strips. (Cut fat eighths into 3 strips each for a total of 72 strips). Do not cut striped fabric before class.

  • Carefully sew each of the accent strips to each of the wider strips with a scant ¼" seam for a total of 72 strips. Do a test sample first. The sewn strip must measure exactly 3 7/8" across the width. Gently press the seam allowance for one group of fabrics towards the accent fabric; and for the second group of fabrics press the seam away from the accent fabric. Use a dry iron DO NOT USE STEAM!

ADDITIONAL FABRICS:

There are various ways that the blocks can be set. You will need larger pieces of fabric for borders, setting squares and triangles. Harmonise the additional fabrics with the colours you have chosen for your blocks. Make sure you have a variety of prints and variations in value. I suggest a range of ½ m - 1m - 1½ m - 2m lengths. Bring as much as you can comfortably carry!

* If you want to use stripes and cannot buy fat quarters, buy half a metre of each.
