Needs List

  • Sewing machine in good working order. Spare needles. Extension cord.

  • Rotary cutter, mat, 12 x 6 ½" ruler, 6 ½" square. Bring larger rulers and squares if you prefer.
  • Spray CAN "CRISP" spray starch or similar (pump sprays do not work as well; allow time to purchase on arrival if necessary especially if travelling by plane)
  • Sewing equipment: pins, scissors, seam ripper etc.
  • Mid grey thread or mid value colour to blend with your fabrics.

FABRICS

  • Choose fabrics from two colour groups (colour families) eg. Red / black; blue / yellow; purple / green etc. VARIETY is important eg; florals, dots, stripes, plaids, checks, tone on tone, hand dyes etc. Make sure you have contrast in scale of pattern in your prints eg. large / small /medium florals. Include a good range of lights, mediums, and dark values. You can use the full range of a colour eg.

  • REDS: anything from the red colour family- pinks, hot pinks, magenta, bright red, crimson, burgundy, etc.
  • BLACKS: any fabrics that are predominately black + greys.
  • Fat quarters are good, and scraps are suitable but they must be at least 5 ½" square.
  • You will use a lot of fabric so bring what you can comfortably carry. Aim to have a large range and variety. NB: Big splashy prints work very well. Try to have a minimum of 16 fabrics in each colour family. More is better.

Other Materials

  • Pellon batting or white flannel sheet approximately 40" x 60" (100x150 cm), or larger if you wish, + masking tape (brown packaging tape 2" wide) to set up a design wall.

  • Notepad & pencil
  • Camera (optional)
