REQUIREMENTS LIST

These workshops are fun, open-ended art and design exercises that lend themselves in various ways to creating imagery and formats for textiles and quilting. You need a variety of items most of which can be found at home, newsagent or charity shop. I have given guidelines for amounts of things only to help prevent worrying or over bringing too much. Sample size projects smaller than A4 means little bits of fabric and papers. We will swap bits and pieces too, so don't worry if you can't get it all.

  • A4 Sketchbook

  • A4 Plastic sleeve folder
  • Drawing tools; lead pencil, eraser, ruler, black felt tip pen, coloured pencils
  • Glue stick; paper & fabric Scissors.
  • Landscape pictures Choose a location that you'd like to do a quilt of. eg. Overseas or holiday destination, local landscape or local landmark or attraction. Then find some pictures of that place. Could be your holiday photos, postcards, travel brochure, calendar pictures, internet pictures or magazine images like the National Geographic. Have a minimum of 3 pictures of that place to use as a reference. Dramatic skies like sunsets are good and bright daytime pictures are too. [We wont be copying one complete image]
  • Coloured papers A4 or smaller 10 or so. Eg copy paper
  • Magazine to cut up...coloured pages, text etc
  • Fabric scraps and leftover bits of your favourite quilting fabrics, (or a charm pack) plain, hand dyed & patterned. Some netting, scrim, transparent fabric like organza or nylon hair scarves from the charity shop. [Variety rather than volume of fabric] Try to have some landscape colours to suit your scene eg earth colours, sky, sunset.
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat.
  • Large sheet of cardboard or thick paper to draw up your design on. You may need to stick a couple together. Size? Up to you...I would be thinking ½ metre x ½ metre ie A2 size approx
  • 1 metre sturdy backing fabric ; denim or curtain fabric. I use rubber backed curtain fabric as it is sturdy and gives a white surface to work on.
  • 3 metres washed 100% cotton fabric. E.g. cotton poplin, PDF calico, homespun [ to paint or hand colour ]
  • 1 metre 100% cotton white and black fabric. E.g. small black spots, stripes [to paint or hand colour ]
  • White embroidery floss or fine crochet cottons[ to paint or hand colour ]
  • Paintbrushes; e.g. pastry brush, plus 3 smaller ones
  • Disposable plastic cups and a plastic plate for paints, rag, newspaper
  • A few pegs and string or cord to make clothes line
  • 1 metre batting.
  • 2 metres white cotton scrim [it is very cheap,  like medical gauze]
  • 1 metre fusible webbing [ eg vleisofix]
  • Assorted quilting fabrics in the colours of your landscape.[eg fat ¼'s] I use Bali print, hand dyes, fabrics with stripes and spots, printed text, small patterns
  • If you have some (don't buy) assorted dressmaking fabric scraps like net, nylon, satin, silks in landscape colours. A shine or texture adds visual interest.
  • 2B pencils, white pencil, black fabric marker
  • Sewing machine in good working order, with instruction book, cords and an extension cord.
  • Scissors, pins, quilting pins, spare needles and usual sewing gear
  • Threads; neutral coloured cottons plus fancy -eg rayon plain and variegated machine embroidery threads
  • Decorative embellishments ONLY if you have them; embroidery floss, beads, buttons, shells, glitz and bling.
