Intermediate but general machine and hand sewing skills and flexibility to improvise needed

There is an additional cost of $NZ20.00 for the following materials supplied by the tutor:

  • Layout paper for transfer dyes

  • Hand dyed silks and organza fabrics
  • Polyester fabrics and synthetic sheer fabrics
  • Colour photocopies of images
  • Use of transfer dyes and silk paints 
  • Use of mouth diffusers                                      

Needs List for Participants:

  • Sewing machine plus instruction book and extension lead

  • Sewing machine feet including,
  • Zigzag foot (Bernina No. 1), 
  • Darning foot or free machine embroidery foot (Bernina Nos. 9, or 24 or 29) 
  • Open embroidery foot (Bernina No. 20) 
  • Sewing machine needles, include "Topstitch" for use with machine embroidery threads   
  • Needles for hand sewing, include one for thick threads also
  • Pins
  • Embroidery hoop, size 6" (15cm) diameter, or 8" (20cm) diameter 
  • Machine embroidery threads, a choice of colours and cotton or polyester threads
  • Monofilament thread, e.g. "Sulky Invisible" 232 0001 or similar
  • Thicker threads such as crochet and hand embroidery threads in colours that you have
  • Scissors for cutting fabric, wadding 
  • Small scissors suitable for cutting appliqué 
  • Scissors for cutting paper
  • Cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter
  • Pieces of net or tulle, synthetic organza, organza ribbon, and silk scraps that you already have
  • Pieces of white or cream polyester fabrics, synthetic organza, net curtain fabrics, non-iron interfacing or pelmet Vilene, approx .1m x 1m in total
  • 1m x 1m wadding or batting, 2oz weight or thinner
  • 1m x 1m of curtain lining or cotton, white or cream, for backing fabric  
  • Cheap paint brush, ½ inch or 1 inch size
  • Sponge
  • Some stabilising material such as fine or medium iron-on "Vilene" or similar 
  • "Bondaweb" or other fusible web
  • A photograph with interesting lines and structures
  • A4 sheet of light card, suitable for making "viewing windows"
  • A few sheets of squared or graph paper
  • Notebook, pencil, ball point pen and a few sheets of photocopy paper
