Skill Level

Intermediate but you need knowledge of your own sewing machine and use of darning or free machine embroidery foot.

There is an additional cost of $NZ20.00 for the following materials supplied by the tutor:

  • Lazertran transfer paper sheets

  • Fabrics include habotai silk, cotton organdie, silk organza, tulle, polyester satin
  • Hydrosoluble film, 25 microns and 75 microns weight
  • Choice of thick threads and cords

Needs List for Participants:

  • Sewing machine plus instruction book and extension lead.

  • Sewing machine feet including, Zigzag foot (Bernina No. 1), Darning foot or Free machine embroidery foot (Bernina Nos. 9, or 24 or 29). 
  • Open embroidery foot (Bernina No. 20). 
  • Optional but useful:  Pintuck foot (Bernina No. 31), Braiding Foot (Bernina No. 21)
  • Extra bobbin case and some spare bobbins.
  • Sewing machine needles, include "Topstitch" for use with machine embroidery threads.   Twin needles, 2/80, 3/90, and 4/100 are the most useful
  • Needles for hand sewing, include one for thick threads also
  • Pins
  • Spring embroidery hoop, size 6" (15cm) diameter, or 8" (20cm) diameter. 
  • Machine embroidery threads, a choice of colours and cotton or polyester threads, including white
  • Monofilament thread, e.g. "Sulky Invisible" 232 0001 or similar
  • Thicker threads such as crochet thread in white and any other colour that you have
  • Scissors for cutting fabric, wadding and small scissors suitable for cutting appliqué bits
  • Cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter
  • Some wadding or batting, 2oz weight or thinner
  • Approx . 18" x 18" (45cm x 45cm) each of coloured cotton, white cotton and white dupion silk fabric 
  • Pieces of organza, organza ribbon, and silk scraps that you already have
  • A small quantity of felt, or hand-made felt
  • Some stabilising material such as fine or medium "Vilene" or similar 
  • "Bondaweb" or other fusible web
  • A small piece of polystyrene board, or packaging, about the size of an A4 sheet of paper
  • Notebook, pencil, biro and a few sheets of photocopy paper
